Stephen Hallam

Head Judge at World Bread Awards

Stephen Hallam was Managing Director of Dickinson & Morris at Ye Olde Pork Pie Shoppe in Melton Mowbray for 28 years from 1992. He brings the Melton Mowbray Pork Pie to life through his interesting demonstrations, which show the technique of hand raising an authentic Melton Mowbray Pork Pie.

Stephen is a baker by profession and has quite literally worked his way around the world (3 times), having spent a significant amount of time as Head Patissier on the QE2 (including the Falklands campaign), as well as working in Germany and Spain.

He has won numerous industry awards including the prestigious City & Guilds Silver Medal for Bread Making. With an excess of energy and infectious enthusiasm that inspires those around him, The Daily Telegraph voted him ‘The Nicest Man in England’ for Outstanding Customer Service.

He co-founded the Melton Mowbray Pork Pie Association (MMPPA) and the British Pie Awards.

He is a Liveryman and past Court Assistant of the Worshipful Company of Bakers

Past President of the Bakers & Confectioners’ Association
Chairman of Judging at the World Bread Awards (now in their 12th year)
Member of the British Society of Baking

He continues to be Secretary and Treasurer of the Melton Mowbray Pork Pie Association

Since retirement in 2020 Stephen is now a Bakery Consultant. As an ambassador for the bakery industry he has often appeared on TV or radio waxing lyrical about Melton Mowbray pork pies and the importance of Britain’s regional food heritage. In June 2023 he was awarded an MBE in the King’s Birthday Honours for services to the Baking Industry and his local Communities of Lincolnshire and Leicestershire in the UK.
